Attractions

Named after British naval commander Rear Admiral Sir Frederick William Richards, who landed troops on the Zululand coast in 1879, this was a small fishing village until the port was opened in 1976.

With a climate that feels as though it's summer all year round, there is plenty of fun to be had. There are a host of uutdoor sporting and recreational opportunities. There is swimming and surfing at the Alkaststrand and Neawark beaches, while the Tuzi Gazi Waterfront, Naval Island and Pelican Island are a delight for anglers, jet skiers, power-boaters, canoeists and sailing enthusiasts.

There is an abundance of animal and birdlife around Richards Bay and they can be enjoyed in their natural environment. Dolphin and whale-watching is possible from the beach and there are crocodile and hippo viewing opportunities. The Crocodile Farm is a must see for kids, while tours to the Hluhluwe/Umfolozi Game Reserve (and other world reknown game reserves) can be arranged.

Zululand is full of cultural activities. A visit to the St Lucia Wetland World Heritage Site is a must see. DumaZulu is another cultural attraction that allows visitors to enjoy an authentic African cultural experience during their stay in Zululand

Shakaland, The Zulu traditional village is a must visit - even if only for a few hours. Guests are greeted with traditional Zulu hospitality and etiquette. Service invariably comes with a big smile from a people who relish showing off their heritage.
