  • The Annual Sardine Run

The annual migration of sardines which move up the coast in a northerly direction is the most important biological occurrence that takes place in the waters of KwaZulu-Natal. Every year around June/July the sardine shoals leave their home on the Aghulas Banks and move up the coast towards Mozambique over a period of between 7 – 8 weeks. This phenomenon is thought to be generated when the colder water of the Aghulas banks moves up the southern coast of KwaZulu-Natal. The size of the shoal differs from day to day. They can be small pockets of fish or the shoal can be as large as 1km wide and 5kms long!! It is not a continuous shoal but it is many different shoals that come through.

Sardine Run: Approximately 20 000 dolphins(600 resident dolphins), 100 000 Cape gannets and 1000’s of whales, sharks and game fish follow the shoals northwards, providing anglers with bountiful harvest. Occasionally shoals come close inshore and can be netted from the beach. During the migration the shark nets are removed from beaches so as not to interfere with this unique natural phenomenon. In days gone by it was word-of-mouth that sent hundreds of sardine seekers to where the sardines where close enough inshore to view. Nowadays, however, the Natal Sharks Board maintains a “Sardine Hotline” for the runs duration. This provides regular updates and situation reports, ensuring optimum crowds at “hot spots”!! For less ‘hands on’ yet equally thrilling memories one can marvel at birds eye view of the entire panorama by strapping yourself into a microlight or you could take a chartered boat for an “up close and personal” encounter with the dolphins, sharks, whales and whatever unexpected participant might be joining in the frenzy!! Whichever way you choose to view them, the annual Sardine Run is a unique experience that guarantees memories for a lifetime.
