CERAMICS:

Catherine’s ceramics vary from delicate lace and basket inspired forms to sculptural work and tableware. She works in both earthenware and stoneware and utilizes a number of different techniques such as Raku and smokefiring.

Catherine Brennon works from The Underberg Studio. She creates one of a kind pieces, often with lace impressions. Her ceramics are on view  and are for sale in the gallery attached to the studio.

Catherine is influenced by many things: natural life form patterns, African sculpture and textiles, wilderness landscapes, music, the spiritual life. From the time of her initial training in ceramics (1977-79) she has endeavoured to connect with people through the medium of clay. She maintains her biggest responsibility to her craft is to remain enthusiastic and energized in what she does with clay. To this end she continually exposes herself to the work of other artists and is constantly updating her skills and knowledge through courses and travel. During 2002/3 Catherine returned to the Witwatersrand Technikon where she converted her 3 year Diploma in ceramics to a BTech Ceramics Degree, passing with distinction. The practical component during this period required pieces to be made with reference to textures such as lace, basketry and other woven surfaces. This resulted in the body of work that she is still currently busy with, which can be viewed at the gallery.

Directions

Take the N3 to Durban. Get off at Exit 99 at Howick and just follow the R617 to Underberg (about 1hr 15mins from this turnoff). A word of caution though. There are long stretches without fences and often unattended cattle and goats (and children!) on this road so please take extra care and do not speed! Mist can also be a problem in the early mornings and evenings. As you come into Underberg the road comes down a hill (past a garage on the left) and curves to the left. Continue on, past the Spar (approx 200m) turning left into Berg Road. When you reach the top of Berg Rd (very bad dirt road), where it intersects Ridge Road, The Underberg Studio will be straight in front of you. As it faces you, the studio is the building on the right. There is parking in the driveway if you wish (although car theft are not a regular event in this part of the planet!) In total the journey should take between 6 and 7 hours from Johannesburg (depending on how many coffee breaks you take!)
